GLP-1 & Weight Loss
Have You heard of the miracle weight loss drug?
Wouldn't it be great if you could take a pill & lose weight?
GLP-1 agonists such as Ozempic and Wegovy are becoming increasingly popular for weight loss, even though they were originally developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. These medications work by increasing feelings of fullness, which can lead to a reduction in caloric intake & weight loss. However, they are not without their potential negative effects, especially when used for weight loss rather than diabetes management.
One of the main concerns with GLP-1 agonists for weight loss is that they can lead to loss of bone mass & lean tissue. In fact, studies have shown that up to two-thirds of all weight loss while taking this medication can come from bone mass and lean tissue, rather than fat. This can be especially concerning for individuals who are already at risk for osteoporosis or other bone-related issues.
For example, if you lose 15lbs while taking GLP-1, up to 10lbs is coming from muscle & bone. Which means your body fat percentage is actually increasing! Essentially you are starving yourself to achieve weight loss.
Additionally, GLP-1 agonists have been associated with other negative effects when used for weight loss, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headache, & low blood sugar levels. These side effects can be especially pronounced during the initial weeks of treatment, but may subside over time.
It is important to note that GLP-1 agonists are not recommended for weight loss unless an individual has a BMI of 27 or greater and at least one weight-related health issue, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Furthermore, GLP-1 agonists should always be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional, who can monitor for potential negative effects & adjust the treatment plan as necessary.
In conclusion, while GLP-1 agonists such as Ozempic and Wegovy can be effective for weight loss, they are not without their potential negative effects. It is important to carefully weigh the potential risks & benefits of this medication, especially when used for weight loss rather than diabetes management. Individuals considering GLP-1 agonists for weight loss should consult with their healthcare provider to determine if this medication is appropriate for their specific needs & health concerns.
